Paul V. Spiegl, M.D.

Board Certified & Fellowship Trained In
Orthopaedic Foot And Ankle Surgery
Master’s Degree In Bioengineering

Dr. Spiegl’s background is in physics and engineering. He majored in physics in college and attended 2 years of graduate school studying engineering and applied physics and obtaining a master’s degree. This provides him with a unique perspective on correcting bone and joint deformities and in assessing the mechanics of the implants used in orthopaedic surgery.

He attended medical school in his home state of Wisconsin. He also obtained a second master’s degree in bioengineering while attending medical school. He next did his internship in medicine and surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Dr. Spiegl received additional surgery training and his orthopaedic training at Duke. The chairman of orthopaedics at Duke, a world leader in foot and ankle surgery and had served as the president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. The Duke residency program provided exceptional foot and ankle training and inspired Dr. Spiegl to seek further training.

When Dr. Spiegl finished his residency in 1982, there were only 4 fellowship training spots in the U.S. He was fortunate to be selected by the Mayo Clinic fellowship program to obtain an additional year to focus on foot and ankle.

Dr. Spiegl was the first foot and ankle fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon in Georgia when he began his practice in 1983. This gave him the opportunity to evaluate and/or treat a wide range of unusual and complicated foot and ankle conditions. He practiced on the campus of Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital for over 40 years. As such, he has had personal long-term follow-up of the patients for whom he has provided care – some more than 30 years after the surgery he performed.

In 2023, Dr. Spiegl decided to close Perimeter Orthopaedics so he would not have the administrative responsibility of managing the day-to-day running of a practice with multiple providers. This will allow him to concentrate on patient care.

Dr. Spiegl obtained his American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery certification in 1986. He re-certified in 1996, 2006 and 2016 and he is on track to recertify in 2026 so that he will be board certified to December 31, 2036. He intends to continue active clinical and surgical practice through 2028.

Musculoskeletal infections are his second area of interest. Dr. Spiegl has been invited to join 3 international organizations which are dedicated to diagnosing and treating infections of bones and joints. These are the Musculoskeletal Infection Society, the European Bone and Joint Infection Society and the World Organization Against Infections in Orthopaedics and Traumatology. Dr. Spiegl has performed a wide spectrum of surgical procedures and continues full-time clinical practice. Dr. Spiegl provides non-operative treatment, biologics, second opinions and surgical treatment. Many of his patients travel from out-of-state for care.

Telehealth is available for new and established patents as well as for second opinions. In addition to holding a Georgia medical license, Dr. Spiegl is also licensed in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida.
